In Malaysia, staying cool under the sun is a priority, but so is staying on the right side of the law. The Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) enforces specific window tinting regulations to ensure driver visibility and road safety.

Here is the latest guide to help you choose the right tint for your vehicle.

Current JPJ Legal Tint Limits (VLT %)

The law is based on Visible Light Transmission (VLT), which measures how much light passes through the glass. The lower the VLT percentage, the darker the tint.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

JPJ conducts regular checks to ensure safety at night and during heavy rain. If your tint is found to be illegal:

First Offence: A fine of up to RM2,000 or up to 6 months in prison.

Subsequent Offences: A fine of up to RM4,000 or up to 12 months in prison.

Enforcement: You may be required to strip the tint off immediately or attend a follow-up inspection at a JPJ branch.

Exemptions for Darker Tints

If you require darker front windows for specific reasons, you can apply for a legal permit through JPJ:

1. Medical Reasons: For individuals with skin conditions or light sensitivity. Requires a written recommendation from a government medical specialist (Free of charge).

2. Security/Safety Reasons: For individuals who may be at risk. This requires a fee of RM50 for application and RM5,000 for a 2-year permit if approved.
